Healing Herbal Wines, Vinegars & Syrups: Storey Country Wisdom Bulletin A-228
Since 1973, Storey’s Country Wisdom Bulletins have offered practical, hands-on instructions designed to help readers master dozens of country living skills quickly and easily. There are now more than 170 titles in this series, and their remarkable popularity reflects the common desire of country and city dwellers alike to cultivate personal independence in everyday life.

Customer Review: Herbal home remedies
The bulletin covers the basic equipment needed (most, if not all of it, is already in your kitchen), base ingredients, which herbs to use, homespun alchemy, making medicinal wines, medicinal vinegars, bittersweets, syrups, and sugar-free syrups. Recipes included.

What I like best about these Country Wisdom bulletins is that they provide concise information on a single subject. No wasted space.

Three Grapes and a Cold Biscuit
In rural Buford, Alabama, Elba Rae Van Oaks has two options after a messy confrontation with her nemesis takes place in the faculty lounge of the local elementary school: resign her long-held position teaching fifth grade, or submit to mandated counseling sessions with the new school psychologist. When she reluctantly accepts the latter, revelations come forth that surprise even her.

Three Grapes and a Cold Biscuit follows the middle-aged Elba Rae through her unsettling journey of personal disclosure and self exploration-from disgrace to triumph, while uncovering more than a few embarrassing secrets about the good people of Buford:

There’s Dewey Richardson, the disenfranchised war veteran who’s apparently lost all inhibitions with regard to proper clothing;

Poor Miss Nita Perrymore, the frail octogenarian that shows up at one Garden Club meeting too many;

And Elba Rae’s husband, Fettis, whose generous carpentry skills and willingness to help his neighbors create the ripple which eventually travels all the way into the teacher’s lounge and engulfs Elba Rae on a most unfortunate Thursday.

Customer Review: Southern Fun — with just a touch of Darkness
Anyone who enjoys Southern dialogue will find great joy in this book. I laughed — from low, subtle chuckles to loud roaring guffaws as I read Three Grapes and a Biscuit. Characters come alive; the depth is remarkably created primarily by “hearing” the characters’ conversations. We see a glimpse of a “dark side” of some of the Litton County residents–including Elba Rae. Sheer entertainment. Robert Hastings does an excellent job of capturing the Southern voice.

Customer Review: LOVED IT!
I started reading this book and was hooked right off but was suprised by how much it touched something within me . I started thinking of my own family and how you never really know everything about someone no matter how close you are to them.I highly recomend this book to anyone looking for a memorable and enjoyable read .Also congratulations to Robert Hastings on this great book !I will be giving it for Christmas this year. Also I cant wait for his next book to come out which I hear is inb the works.

Matt Kramer’s New California Wine

California has become the hottest wine producing area in the world, and it happened in less than 25 years. Now the acclaimed Wine Spectator columnist and critic Matt Kramer traces the dramatic progress of the California winemaking industry—the who, how, why, what, and where. No one is better equipped to provide insight into the ways in which West Coast vintners are working to create extraordinary wines, and to explain the myriad developments in character, quality, and technology that have taken place. Kramer’s book provides the first comprehensive look at how new approaches to wine making have contributed to California’s current high status in the world order of wine.

Customer Review: California Wine Simplified.
By far, the most complete and easily read book of its type. It puts all of the recent changes in the California AVA’s in perspective.

Customer Review: I’ve read it, I’ve used it, I drank it (well, not really)
I have already nipped into this book several times, especially before trips to nearby Santa Barbara wine country, and Kramer has never steered me wrong yet. Based on his recommendations, I experienced some great wines at Foley and Longoria – not really a GUIDE BOOK per se, no fancy graphics or easy to turn to index pages, but Kramer does have his own wine guide for this. I highly recommend for wino-folks living right here on the left coast.
