Spilt Grape Juice: Rethinking the Worship Tradition
Spilt Grape Juice hits many “sacred traditions” we hold dear about church. For example, parents tell their children, “You are going to wear your best clothes to church”. When asked about a Sunday activity with friends from work, many Christians respond, “I’ll be in church at that time”. Root would ask the piercing question, “What do clothes and being “in church” have to do with worship? Look again at worship, and your Sunday experience may take on new meaning.

Customer Review: A decent Church of Christ book but only moderatly strong in it’s main points
This is another book which I recommend for members of the Church of Christ.

Again an author calls their legalism into question… sort of. It’s almost as if the author Mike Root wants to call the Church of Christ onto the carpet for their rampant legalism which threatens to splinter that denomination (yes, you’re a denomination) yet again but doesn’t quiet have the guts to go all the way with it.

Root makes some good points and there are certainly things to be learned from his stands on things such as the communion (Lord’s supper, Eucharist though you’ll never hear that term in the Church of Christ).

It would serve many of the more extremely legalistic Churches of Christ to read this book but Root could have been much stronger on some of his points. I just have a feeling that Churches of Christ will read this book and go “He’s right… those OTHER Churches should think about that” and never look in the mirror themselves.

An easy and rather quick read and would encourage adult Church of Christ preachers and class teachers to take a look at this book and examine it’s points.

Customer Review: The Lord’s Supper is not just a ceremony
It was as a Passover meal was concluding that Jesus took bread and grape juice from the table and began what has become what some call a religious ceremony. Mike Root points out that each time the meal of remembrance is spoken of in apostolic teaching and practice, it was done as part of a meal. Since every Christian is a priest, the author points out that “the Lord’s Supper” needs no priestly intercession in order to be pleasing to the Master. Excellent thinking and writing is “Spilt Grape Juice.” Many will be surprised by what is obviously taught in the Bible about our walk with the Lord Jesus. This book “tells it like it is.”
