THE BONUS YEARS DIET: A CONTRIBUTION TO CULTURE<br />  Ralph Felder&#8217;s diet book is a lifetime labor of love.  Felder, a practicing physician and scientist who holds M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford, and is the author of a book on magnetic resonance imaging, is exceedingly qualified to address the science of health.  He handles the interaction between chemistry and health, and the aesthetics of cooking and eating, with an affection that will win your heart.  There is enough science here to keep you informed, yet not so much as to lose the thread of health and its by-product, happiness.  There are enough recipes to open four successful restaurants serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.  The meticulous attention given to flavor, variety, appearance, and budget (both of time and of money), make The Bonus Years a milestone in human culture.<br />  The idea of Bonus Years is that people want to live longer, and stay healthy when they do; and that diet is the crucial component that can make that (statistically) possible.  The book has an easy-to-read, open style that invites you in.  Felder&#8217;s information comes from controlled studies; and he includes a list of references for anyone interested in learning the chemistry and epidemiology at first-hand.  The strategy is that certain medicines, aspirin, folic acid, statin, and blood-pressure medicines, which reduce the risk of heart disease and debilitating high blood pressure, can be obtained more pleasantly by eating the right foods.  These are <b>red wine</b>, dark chocolate, fruits and vegetables, fish, garlic and nuts.  These, combined with such irresistibles as sirloin steak, olive oil, honey, turkey, whole-wheat pasta, and many others, offer about as pleasant a way of staying healthy as can be imagined.  If one of the core foods doesn&#8217;t appeal to you, you can omit it without much penalty.  The statistically demonstrable extra six years of life gives The Bonus Years Diet a scientific foundation that is unique.  The recipes are inspired. My daughter bought this book for me after reading about it in Oprah magazine.  Dosing food like doctors dose pills.  A great idea.  Dr. Felder gives us menus for an entire month and that makes it so easy to follow this diet.  The recipes are great.  He is a chef and knows his stuff!  My husband loves chocolate so his new favorite dessert is the chocolate risotto pudding.  I love the stuffed french toast.    I just saw Dr. Felder on tv and as he says &#8220;this is a diet we cal live with.&#8221;  </p>

This book by Albert W.A. Schmid is full of interesting, historical details regarding the <b>history of wine</b>s, beers and spirits.  His Louisville roots are evident when one reads his sections on Kentucky Bourbon.  Bourbon drinkers will drool!  Wines are segmented &#8220;by the grape&#8221; which makes understanding the large variety of wineries and varietals very easy and simple.  This book gives an excellent overview of wines, beers and spirits &#8212; from the way they are produced to the myriad of ways they can be paired with your favorite foods!</p>

<br /><b>Customer Review:</b> Missing the most important information!<br />
The guide is very much standard in terms of layout &#8211; begins with notes about the tasting and rating processes, gives an overview of Spanish wines, and then delves into the various regions giving an overview of each, together with listings of most estates and their wines. The book ends with a nice list of top wines, and an index that seems to work well.</p>
<p>However, on page 9, the author states that with each rating he also gives the price range of the wine, as well as a rating of the value for money (1 to 5 stars). Umm, nice&#8230; but where is this information? It seems to me that the publishers of this English-language edition simply removed this information for what can only be commercial reasons and protection of import monopolies in your country.</p>
<p>As most of us who buy this book do not live in Spain itself, the price and value for money information is of utmost importance (is my local importer ripping me off, is this special offer really a good offer, am I paying too much for a 92 point wine, etc). Very disappointing &#8211; especially in a guide that is meant to stand above commercial interests and inform the consumer for his or her benefit.</p>
<p>I would imagine that the Spanish original would have this information. May be worth getting it just for that, and learning a bit of Spanish won&#8217;t hurt you either.</p>

The book has wonderful photography, with a nice history of the region. A few major vineyards are listed, but don&#8217;t expect it to be a list of key Burgundian hot spots! More the asthetic and artistic history of the area and how wine got started and grew.</p>

The title of this book is a little misleading, the book does cover selecting, building, and managing wine.  However, this information only acocunts for about 1/4 of the book. The rest of the book talks about wine in general. The cellaring chapters were very detailed and answered all of my questions.  The other 3/4 of the book was interesting and covered your basic intro to wine information. If you want to know more about wine, or are looking for a complete guide on different ways to cellar wine, then this book is for you.<br />

It tells how a sparkling beverage that became the toast of society during the Belle Epoque emerged after World War I as a global icon of fine taste and good living. The book celebrates the gutsy, larger–than–life characters whose proud determination nurtured and preserved the land and its grapes throughout centuries of conflict.</P><br />
<br /><b>Customer Review:</b> An interesting angle on history<br />
Champagne&#8217;s role in history &#8211; a fascinating read. I learned things I never knew before.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, some of the &#8220;facts&#8221; presented in the book seem to be stretches. For example, here&#8217;s a quote from the book: </p>
<p>&#8220;Champagne was a patchwork of warring fiefdoms whose leaders kept the province in constant turmoil&#8230;.In 1095 Pope Urban declared &#8220;Let those who until now have been moved only to fight their fellow Christians now take up arms against the infidel.&#8221; With these words, the First Crusade began. His call for a holy war struck a particularly responsive chord with his fellow Champenois, as warlords and others put aside differences and set off for Jerusalem, accompanied by their armies and retinues.&#8221;</p>
<p>The book suggests this was the convenient excuse to invade another country &#8212; to prevent fighting among themselves at home.</p>
<p><b>Customer Review:</b> Silly Nonsense<br />
I found this book&#8211;which I finally threw down unfinished in irritation after the umpteenth faux &#8220;fact&#8221; was presented&#8211;trite beyond belief. I presume that a history is factual. This was not. The authors presented so much factually wrong, unsupported information and claims that I finally decided I could not justify spending more time reading it. For instance, they claim that both Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette drank champagne with a last meal before their executions. Well, Louis did enjoy a fairly good meal&#8211;without champagne&#8211;before his execution. Marie Antoinette, however, was so brutally treated and degraded by her captors as the Widow Capet before hers that there most assuredly was no &#8220;last meal&#8221; for her, much less a champagne chaser. Her maid recounted the details of her prevailing upon her to eat a few mouthfuls of some vermicelli which she warmed up on her stove in her cell. If she drank anything it was water&#8211;likely from the nearby and very polluted Seine. Anyone offering her champagne would have most certainly ended up being arrested for royalist sympathies. With all the many fine sources out there on both of these executionsw, how can the Kladstrups get away with printing such trite, factually wrong drivel merely to add some silly patina of faux glamour to their thesis? Then they go on to describe the aristocrats being guillotined, describing how the victims were forced to kneel and put their heads on the block. Have the Kladstrups even the remotest familiarity with how a guillotine works?? There is no block. There is no kneeling. There is no cooperation by the victim whatsoever. Read any source on the topic. Yet again, the Kladstrups trot out rubbish which is not even factually close to correct. Their description of the executions of Desmoulins and Danton&#8211;whom they falsely claim were drunk and singing a drinking song as they awaited their executions&#8211;round out this litany of utterly fabricated nonsense by which they attempt to link champagne to just about every event in French history. So. With so much drivel and made up &#8220;fact&#8221;, how can one trust, much less enjoy, any of their other assertions in this so-called history? Definitely a candidate for recycling&#8211;or the outhouse.</p>

This is the definitive account of one God that failed. It describes a man&#8217;s loss of faith during the 1930s in the international Communist movement. Wanted as a terrorist, he slips back into southern Italy where he hides as a Catholic priest recovering from tuberculosis. Fascism is rampant and war with Ethiopia has given national purpose to Italians suffering from economic stagnation. His priestly duties involve offering forgiveness to Catholics saddled with a primitive and uncompromising faith. His contacts in the Comintern underground demand his obedience to party dogma from Moscow that he now sees as meaningless. While Silone offers no grand solution to the dilemna that loss of faith presents, the book presents an uncompromising and wonderfully written portrait of the strength and weakness of humanity in the Godless world of the 20th Century.</p>
<p><b>Customer Review:</b> Excellent book<br />
I had to read this book for an Italian history class and it was excellent. The book deals with different concepts, but is primarily related to the role of religion in fascist Italy. We follow the path of Pietro Spina and his persona as a priest, and we see how those regard him act and feel.</p>
<p> I highly recommend this book!</p>

This book is not only great for feeling good about the way you eat or &#8220;dieting&#8221; if you insist.  For me it is such a nice change from the status quoe meals giving you gourmet alternatives for quick meals.  Plus the bonus that you are being healthy yet feeling decadent!  I have tried probably over half of the recipes and they have all turned out so well that a few are now family favorites made all the time. </p>
<p>If you just enjoy food and wine I think you will enjoy this book.  I got it as a gift and have given as a gift and we all love it!<br />
<br /><b>Customer Review:</b> Same ol High Protein Diet<br />
I was really disappointed with this book and sent it back.  I was hoping for a book that was about having balance, eating healthy but not depriving yourself.  Instead, this book is the same old song about eating loads and loads of protein.  There are absolutely NO carbs in any of the recipes (unless you count your veggies).  This just isnt realistic.  Power to you people who can follow Atkins, but our brains need glucose in order to function optimally &#8211; I know I do!  Dont buy this if you&#8217;re hoping for a balanced diet &#8211; this is not.  I give two stars because the recipes look good and are presented well.  </p>

I wish you could give 6-stars or a &#8220;Classic&#8221; rating. This book is to wine texts as The godfather II is to cinema.  If you have not ready this book&#8217;s section on wine tasting then you should not be allowed to <b>make wine</b>, sell wine, nor call yourself a wine expert.<br />
<br /><b>Customer Review:</b> Making the most commercially viable wine products  possible<br />
The individual who will typically buy or consider acquiring this<br />book, is the wine appreciator, who knows its healthy properties and<br />effects (French Paradox &#8211; eat more, live longer and better), coupled<br />with the cultural aspects. </p>
<p>The Portuguese, French, Spanish, Italian and cultures that resulted from<br />the Roman Empire 2,000 years ago, obviously are born and raised with <br />a peculiar appreciation and knowledge of wine, not just those raised<br />on a farm.</p>
<p>Specifically about this work, it&#8217;s clearly intended for those who <br />are fine-tuning the almost scientific aspects of industrial quantity<br />production of wine, as compared to the traditional, rural, small or<br />medium-wine maker operations.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s a lot of talk of specific equipment, procedures, fine-tuning<br />recipes and strategies to get the most commercially viable wine possible.</p>
<p>For those who have their own basic wine making tools, for their own<br />households or friends and family, small operations, this book will not<br />bring them any benefit, even less considering the incredible price tag<br />on this work.</p>
<p>I would suggest COX&#8217;s book FROM VINES TO WINES, or Stanley Anderson&#8217;s <br />WINEMAKING, instead.</p>
