The heart of Burgundy, the Côte D’Or, produces Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines that are unrivaled in their quality, intensity, and ability to age in the bottle. On this “golden slope” in eastern France, with its unique terrains and climats, grow the vines for some of the world’s finest wines, among them such heralded names as Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée, Puligny- and Chassagne-Montrachet, and Aloxe-Corton. Clive Coates, Master of Wine, has spent much of the last fifteen years in the Côte D’Or, and this book is the splendid result of his assiduous exploring, tasting, and assessing of the region’s wines.
With his unique access to each clos and domaine, and to individual negociants and vignerons, Coates may know more about the Côte D’Or and its wines than any other living writer. In Part One, he describes the Côte D’Or’s famous villages, introduces every manor grower and his wines, and evaluates each grand and premier cru, recommending the best sources in every climat. Part Two profiles the top sixty domaines, with notes on a vertical tasting of one of their wines. Part Three consists of vintage assessments on the best red and white years since 1945 and includes thousands of detailed tasting notes.
Côte D’Or is a work of love and passion, praise and criticism, understanding and scholarship. Above all, it is a celebration of one of the world’s great wine regions, the people who live there, and their fabled wines. It is an essential addition to every wine library and an inviting read for any wine lover.

Customer Review: Coates Review
Overall, the text is easy to read and it is educational. However, the individual wines reviewed are not even close to being up to date. Because this was written years ago, it doesn’t cover many of the new up and coming wines and vintners.

Customer Review: The best of its kind
Burgundy is one of the most difficult-to-grasp wine regions in the world. Many studies have been done on the soil, climate, wind direction, sun exposure, rainfall, etc., yet nobody really knows, yet, why one acre of Burgundy produces a certain kind of wine and the acre right next to it something different. Clive Coates book comes as close as humanly possible to explain it. He begins his sections with a “History” of the region, then continues with “Location”, “Vineyard”, and then defines and describes the wines made from the Grand Crus and the Premier Crus, recommending sources and also providing the size of each vineyard. Also, he covers vintages.

It’s amazing how Coates takes such a difficult region and maps it out so succinctly for us. Far better effort than Parker’s “Burgundy”.

The skills used in the making of wine are directly relevant to the consumer, for the choices made in the vineyard and in the winery are crucial to the quality of the end product. Here, for the first time, is a book that enlightens the wine lover on the “hows” and “whys” of the winemaker’s choices.
Today, winemakers have at their disposal an unprecedented array of opportunities to influence the way their wine will taste: science and technology have granted them creative power undreamt of only twenty years ago. Wine is no longer entirely the product of nature; it is a collaboration, and one in which the winemaker is becoming more and more the dominant partner.
The winemaker’s choices begin in the vineyard with the selection of the grape variety and the way it will be farmed. In the winery, every step poses questions, from crushing the grapes to bottling the wine. The sum total of the decisions taken by the winemaker is the taste of the wine in our glass, and this book explains how this taste is achieved.
Hugh Johnson and James Halliday explore this fast-moving new world, looking at the influence of tradition, the effects of modern technology, and the latest thinking of winemakers from every continent.
For everyone for whom a glass of wine is worth a moment’s reflection, this is an essential book. Beautiful, absorbing, and entertaining, The Vintner’s Art combines the best in wine writing with dramatic modern design, using graphics and superb photography.

Customer Review: Unique
There are four main sources of flavor in wine.
* The grape variety.
* The place where it is grown.
* The way in which it is grown
* The winemaking techniques used.

This valuable book is mostly about the last of these sources,
although there is a brief nod to vineyard management at the
beginning.

You could argue for any of these sources as the primary source
of wine’s flavor and could easily produce pairs of wines that
support your claim. Grape varieties, like apple varieties,
have different flavors. These differences become accentuated
when grape juice ferments into wine and produces or reveals
its unique set of acids, esters, and other flavor chemicals.

Vineyards have their own flavors, too. Apart from obvious
considerations like sun exposure and soil structure, we
know depressingly little about how this works. People who
own the vineyards that produce the best wines often make
a great deal of the unique contribution of their particular
patch of ground, and we can hardly blame them. “Them” in
this case is mostly the French, who use the word “terroir”
to express this influence. Many of these winemakers consider
their mission to be allowing their wine to `”express the
nature of the terroir” Incidentally, all the possible
jokes about “terroirists” have already been made.

The management of grape vines in order to optimize flavor
has been a realm of extreme conservativism until recently.
Peasant farmers are understandably reluctant to undertake
experiments when tradition is recognizeably safe.

Winemaking techniques expand, contract, or radically alter
the taste of wine. Some of these alterations – like
prolonged contact between the freshly crushed juice and
the grape skins or the choice of yeast – are in deliberate
service to the flavors they produce. Others, like filtration
and pasteurization, are driven by economic considerations
and have secondary-and sometimes unfortunate-flavor consequences.

It’s the discussion of this last area-a matter often hinted
at in other publications-that this book does so well. Taking
each of eight categories of wine, the book discusses the
winemaking choices that go into producing the characteristic
taste of that category. So we have chapters on:

Light-bodied Whites
Wooded and Full-bodied Whites
Sparkling
Sweet
Light-bodied Reds
Medium-bodied Reds
Full-bodied Reds
Fortified Wines

There is a brief section on the rôle of barrel storage,
but it’s far from complete.

The description of winemakers’ choices in this book
is clear, extensive and beautifully presented. Their
occasional snide remarks about New World winemaking should
be taken lightly as a bit of Euro-Austro provincialism.

Delightful reading for anyone who wants to know where
all those great tastes come from.

–Lynn Hoffman, author of THE NEW SHORT COURSE IN WINE and
the forthcoming novel bang BANG from Kunati Books.ISBN
9781601640005

Customer Review: Not merely a coffee-table book
I bought this book as a companion volume to my little home winemaking library and am very glad I did. The authors explain and illustrate very clearly the choices that winemakers make in response to, and to complement, what nature gives them: The Grape. Four stars because of the exclusive focus on “great” wines (far too expensive for you and I), which as Johnson freely admits, are as much a product of mystique, fame, and rarity as of winemaking practice. Also, the authors’ constant fawning over everything French at the expense of the rest of the world lessens the book’s value to someone interested in winemaking in California. Still, beautiful photography combined with clear illustrations and excellent, sharp writing make this a must read for the serious winelover interested in more than snobbery, or the amateur winemaker intent on improving his/her closet-full of cab.

For some time the media has been abuzz with news of the health benefits of wine, but until now there has been no authoritative source for those interested in making wine part of a healthy diet. Coauthored by a noted cardiologist and an award-winning chef, The Wine Lover’s Healthy Weight Loss Plan shows how you can easily shed unwanted pounds, while maximizing the health benefits of your favorite wines.

Customer Review: Not just for wine lovers
In my business, I receive a lot of requests for endorsements, but accept only those I deem the best. And I jumped on this request immediately. It could not be more appropriate for my audience.

I agree with the reviewer from Seattle who described this as a great reference book – both for its informed health information and its storehouse of healthy gourmet recipes (no those are NOT compatible).

Not just for wine lovers? No, this is a great source book for those wondering whether wine can be beneficial to their health. The answer is yes it is beneficial, if consumed daily and in moderation. And that’s good news for all of us.

Customer Review: Informational and realistic
Being an active and health conscious individual, I was looking for a realistic weight loss plan that would suit my urban lifestyle. After reading the “Wine Lovers…” I’ve found what I was looking for. This book provides a food and wine education surrounding the lifestyle choices of those in the Mediterranean. The “Wine Lovers…” author(s) are passionate, well-informed, and educated. Their enthusiasm for food and wine spills gracefully onto the pages of this book. The “Wine Lovers…” also boasts quality recipes far above the standard for diet books. It’s like having a gourmet cookbook inside a diet book! I urge anyone who is looking for a lifestyle change, trying to lose weight, or who simply desires the richness and fulfillment of wine to consider this book for purchase.

The history of civilization is, in many ways, the history of wine. This book is the first comprehensive and up-to-date account of the earliest stages of vinicultural history and prehistory, which extends back into the Neolithic period and beyond. Elegantly written and richly illustrated, Ancient Wine opens up whole new chapters in the fascinating story of wine and the vine by drawing upon recent archaeological discoveries, molecular and DNA sleuthing, and the texts and art of long-forgotten peoples.

Patrick McGovern takes us on a personal odyssey back to the beginnings of this consequential beverage when early hominids probably enjoyed a wild grape wine. We follow the course of human ingenuity in domesticating the Eurasian vine and learning how to make and preserve wine some 7,000 years ago. Early winemakers must have marveled at the seemingly miraculous process of fermentation. From success to success, viniculture stretched out its tentacles and entwined itself with one culture after another (whether Egyptian, Iranian, Israelite, or Greek) and laid the foundation for civilization itself. As medicine, social lubricant, mind-altering substance, and highly valued commodity, wine became the focus of religious cults, pharmacopoeias, cuisines, economies, and society. As an evocative symbol of blood, it was used in temple ceremonies and occupies the heart of the Eucharist. Kings celebrated their victories with wine and made certain that they had plenty for the afterlife. (Among the colorful examples in the book is McGovern’s famous chemical reconstruction of the funerary feast–and mixed beverage–of “King Midas.”) Some peoples truly became “wine cultures.”

When we sip a glass of wine today, we recapitulate this dynamic history in which a single grape species was harnessed to yield an almost infinite range of tastes and bouquets. Ancient Wine is a book that wine lovers and archaeological sleuths alike will raise their glasses to.

Customer Review: Very little to “wine” about
Pardon my title; this is an amazing book. Essential for anyone interested in wine history. There was the occasional repetition of certain sentences and phrases that an editor ought to have caught (I’m an editor, I notice these things) but in a nutshell the approach the author uses – “molecular archeaology” – is truly revolutionary. What I like best is that he has confirmed, once and for all, that ancient wines were distinctly different from modern wine, most importantly in the sense that they were infused with a wide variety of substances such as resins, plant matter, spices, and the like. This confirms the textual accounts that have survived, but have largely been ignored or marginalized in a number of fields.

A minor quibble: the author is surprisingly skittish on the matter of the potion of the Eleusinian Mysteries, the “kykeon” and makes no mention of works like The Road to Eleusis, and appears to take the position that the Eleusinian kykeon was a “grog” of the sort mentioned in epic poetry. This is unpersausive; grogs do not produce sublime visions, and the ingredients of the Eleusinian kykeon were water, mint, and barley. No wine was present during initiation into the Greater Mysteries, nor would one expect it given that Demeter refuses wine in the Homeric Hymn to Demeter.

Customer Review: Utterly fascinating
I cannot remember holding a book in my hands that caused me more excitement and enchantment any time recently. And the best thing of all is that it is not a fairy tale, not even a “romanticized” account of the ancient history of wine; on the contrary, with all the diligence and impartiality of a good CSI detective, this book sticks to evidence and confirmed facts. Still, it manages to weave a compelling story of how wine was intricately connected with the very origins of civilization (or, should I say, civilizations). The book is not only difficult to put down, but as a viticulture and wine educator I find it impossible to ignore when preparing teaching materials. Granted, there is still a lot of uncertainty about certain wine archaeological issues and much more work to be done, but I find that part probably the most exciting. I recommend this book to the viticulture and wine professional and enthusiast alike, as well as anybody interested in archaeology and origins of civilizations.

Customer Review: More of a Wine Investment
This book explained a lot about Wine Auctions, Wine Investment, and how to look for wine bargains. I was looking more for how to cellar the wine, temperatures, humdity, location, how to build the cellar (starting with wines to purchase or how to think about starting a cellar) for truly wine drinkers and it lacked this information. If you want to invest in wine, great book.

Customer Review: Valuable advice for buying fine wine
Peter Meltzer is a wine and food writer who lives on the Upper East Side and in the Hamptons. He has been “Wine Spectator’s” auction correspondent for more than twenty years.

Meltzer has written a practical approach to building a fine wine collection that fits your preferences, lifestyle, and budget. He covers:

– Buying and selling wine at auction.
– Bidding at online wine auctions.
– Using the Web to calculate value or locate wines.
– Buying effectively from wine merchants.
– Storing and enjoying wine short and long term.

The book includes the “Wine Spectator” auction index which covers over 500 frequently auctioned wines.

Meltzer emphasizes the importance of understanding what you really want to achieve from your wine collection. He urges beginners to start out buying only enough wine for the first year, and gain experience using hints from his book. The hints will be useful no matter what your objectives. He has suggestions and cautions for folks looking for bargains, and warnings for folks at the top end.

For example, Meltzer describes three sales within a few months of one another in 2004. In the first, at NYWinesChristie’s, a case of the Leroy La Romanée 1953 sold for $49,350; just a month later at the same auction house, another case of the same wine sold for $19,975 and then a third sold at Acker Merrall & Condit for $17,550. He discusses the factors that might explain the differences in price, including documented storage history or lack thereof, bidder’s panic, and more.

In a recent interview he points out that collectors at lower price points can benefit from buying at auction: “What’s really heartening is that the market has polarized, It’s the trophy wines at the top for which people will duel to the depths of their pockets, while the lower end of the price spectrum tends to be sane, sound, and accessible. You can buy off-vintages and unsung wines at below retail, often for well under $500 per lot.”

Meltzer answers questions online at “Wine Spectator” in a straight forward, practical manner:

“Q: If I buy wine at auction from a reputable house and open it to find the wine oxidized or just generally shot, is that just part of the risk assumed in buying at auction, or can I ask for a refund?

“A: Auction catalogs generally stipulate that you are buying “as is,” leaving you little recourse if a wine is oxidized. However, auction houses are not in the business of making enemies, and exceptions to the rule may be made. If you uncover an oxidized bottle, immediately bring it to the attention of the auction specialist and provide him with a sample to evaluate. (This won’t work, of course, if it’s been several years since your purchase.) As a rule, auction houses carefully inspect consignments prior to acceptance, so danger signs, such as low fill levels, inappropriate color, protruding capsules and so on, should be detected in advance, causing the lot to be rejected.”

Meltzer’s book is an excellent resource if you have any interest in buying wine whether at retail or at auction.

This book covers all the areas I was interested in learning about before our trip to Napa Valley. The reviews seem unbiased and thoughtful. We had visited Napa 18 years ago and while we already had a few ideas, reservations, etc., this guide gave us even more places to consider. I’ve “earmarked” so many pages and even took this guide with us. It also includes maps, addresses and phone numbers and/or websites. Some good recipes are in the back. A good companion guide.

Beer is just a beverage, but wine is an experience. There?s an aura of romance, a hint of the sublime, to bringing a bottle up from your own cellar, carefully drawing out the cork, pouring the wine into a goblet, and taking the first delectable sip.
Now Jeff Cox, author of From Vines to Wines (89,000 copies in print) and a connoisseur well respected in wine circles, shows you how easy it is to have a wine cellar of your own.
But Cellaring Wine is not a home-building project book. In some cases, the would-be wine collector doesn?t have to do much building at all. Rather, Cellaring Wine teaches anyone who loves wine how to create a working system of selecting wines that will age well, know how to lay them down properly, and recognize when they have matured to their full glory and are ready to be savored.
Cox pinpoints the optimum conditions of temperature, light, and humidity for a wine cellar. He walks you through possible locations for your wine cellar ? whether in the basement, an old root cellar, the back of your garage, or even a closet or room in your house ? and what each location requires. He explains when you?ll need a climate-control device (and how much they cost). And he discusses the pros and cons of buying a freestanding unit that is much like a refrigerator.
Then Cox tackles the question that most troubles wine lovers: Which wines will improve with age, and which won?t? This chapter alone is worth the price of the book, since nothing is more disappointing to a wine lover than waiting years to open a bottle of wine only to discover that it was at its peak when it was laid down.
Cox shows you how to keep accurate records so you know at a glance ? without having to hunt through the wine racks ? what you have, where it?s located, and how much to buy so the cellar doesn?t become depleted. And he gives you a crash course in appreciating the fragrance and flavor of a fine wine.Perhaps best of all, Cox gets readers excited about the possibilities of having their own wine cellar. After all, a cellar is not just a storage room, it?s a university where good young wines become great.

Customer Review: Cellaring and much more….
The title of this book is a little misleading, the book does cover selecting, building, and managing wine. However, this information only acocunts for about 1/4 of the book. The rest of the book talks about wine in general. The cellaring chapters were very detailed and answered all of my questions. The other 3/4 of the book was interesting and covered your basic intro to wine information. If you want to know more about wine, or are looking for a complete guide on different ways to cellar wine, then this book is for you.

Customer Review: Exactly what it says…
Jeff Cox has written a wonderful guide for cellaring wine which is nearly complete in all its details. More importantly, he has managed to write it in a way that is highly readable.

Customer Review: Great Wine Journal!
I bought my first wine journal last year. We have shared it with friends and taken it to restaurants to help in wine selections. We’ve not had any problems using the label covers except when we were removing them after the 2nd bottle of wine! It’s become a tradition with friends to include their comments and ratings. We’ve just ordered a second journal to give as a gift.

Customer Review: Wines Appeal to me
I chose the Wine Appeal wine journal because it had the Wine Appeal brand of label removers included in the journal. I’ve been using the Wine Appeal label removers for years and love them and thought I can’t go wrong. I was thrilled when the journal arrived! It is great quality and you can add more pages to it if you want. The pages are sold on Amazon and I just found the label removers on Amazon too. I loved the front cover picture but have taken it out and put in a picture of my husband and I from our recent trip to Napa. I love this journal! It’s what my sister and special wine loving friends will be getting for Christmes.

Customer Review: Amazing…
This little book packs so much information in such a small space. And the tasting chart is very comprehensive, almost better then the wine wheel. Yes, you could do all that this book holds on your own, in your own notebook, but it’s all here, EVERYTHING you need, in one spot. Love it. Got one as a gift for a wine lover too.

Customer Review: A very handy notebook for the beginning wine lover

Twelve years ago I started drinking wine seriously, at first on the advice of a doctor, but soon just for the joy of the endeavor. Several wine lovers taught me that keeping good tasting notes is a great way to learn about wine very quickly. Steve De Long has put together a very handy notebook that will teach you how to do just that.

The first section consists of 60 forms to help guide you in writing notes on your first 60 wines. I’ve posted a copy of the form in the first Comment, and De Long urges you “PLEASE SHARE: Download more forms as well as instructions from from the [De Long website], print out as many as you like, email to your friends or purchase De Long’s Wine Tasting Notebook.”

The second section shows you how to fill out the form for the wines you taste, and the third section teaches you the meanings of 216 commonly used wine tasting words and phrases. The notebook lies flat for easy use, the paper takes a great impression from either pen or pencil, the Notebook looks elegant, and it fits easily in your pocket or purse.

Robin Garr, web master of the fact filled “Wine Lovers Page” and author of The 30 Second Wine Advisor: Learn about wine in 30-second tastes — quick, easy & fun wrote an excellent essay about the value of keeping wine tasting notes:

“But here’s a serious point: Anyone who enjoys wine enough to take it up as a hobby – which in my mind is really what being a wine “geek” is all about – is well advised to adopt early the habit of keeping a TN notebook. Make it a practice to jot down some kind of a note – it doesn’t have to be fancy, but put down at least the name of the wine and a comment (“Great juice!” may be sufficient). At the end of a year, you’ll have a book full of notes, and it can be very helpful to go back and jog your memory – when you try a new wine from the same region, or of the same grape variety, or the next year’s vintage – it helps you build a “palate memory” that will strengthen your tasting skills.

Over the years I’ve written over 50,000 wine tasting notes. My experience in writing them convince me that both the Tasting Notebook and the De Long’s De Long’s Wine Grape Varietal Table are great resources for learning more about wine.

About Wine is a unique resource designed for those who require practical information on how to manage wine and wine sales for restaurants and the hospitality business. Unlike other texts on this subject, this text seeks first to give the reader background information on the origins of wine and how it is produced, and then builds upon this knowledge with information on the wine producing regions of the United States and the World. The numerous variations of wine produced in Europe, North America, and the Southern Hemisphere are presented. Special features of the text include detailed color diagrams and photographs, and useful appendices designed for use as a quick reference or a starting place for more research on topics of interest.

Customer Review: A Simple read with a pleasant bouquet
Needed for school, but enjoyed in spite of that fact.

Customer Review: Great for all beginners!
This is a great resource for the beginning wine lover. Not just culinary students, but average consumers can learn a lot. It’s written intelligently at a basic level and is very complete.
