Here is a quick, fun and easy guide to the world of Spanish Wine. Written by an author who has immersed himself in Spanish culture and its wine over the past fifteen years, this book will give anyone interested in the subject an enjoyable introduction to this fascinating member of the wine world. Important features include: Brief history. Easy-to-follow rundown on Spanish Wine. Basics on understanding Spanish Wine. Wine regions listed by wine types (reds, whites, sparkling wine, sherry). Fun descriptive introduction to each region. Map of each region. Overview of all major wine regions (D.O.) and many minor ones (V.T.). Up-to-date rating of D.O. vintages. Winery-by-winery listings: includes wines, price range, personal recommendations and website addresses. Local gastronomy – insights into the foods of each region. Local anecdotes – fun and interesting facts about this wonderful country and its wine. Glossary of terms. Alphabetical listing of all wines mentioned.

Customer Review: Spanish wine
I have been to Spain a couple of times and this book is pretty informative and accurate from my experience.

Customer Review: A Spanish Wine Travelogue
It appears the author published this guide himself, which might have been necessary due to the folksy conversdational style in which it was written. An uninformed reader would likely lack confidence in the superficial evaluations of the recognized wine regions and the numerous producers. However, Murdock’s solidly positive comments on those wines I have actually sampled so far match my own opinions, which leads me to believe his evaluations are really quite sound. The book is easy to use and should allow me to discover additional wines I might enjoy, which is the main reason why one buys this kind of guide. There can be no doubt that Spanish wines represent great value and provide interesting taste and style variances from the better publicized California, French, Italian, and Australian varietals. On the whole, this guide is a very goof value.

In comparative tastings, wines from California’s Central Coast rival those from such renowned regions as Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Napa, yet they also offer superb value. This is the first comprehensive guide to one of the world’s most dynamic and beautiful wine regions-and the setting for the award-winning movie Sideways. An excellent, one-stop resource for touring and tasting at convenient wineries located from Monterey to Santa Barbara, the guide is organized into county-by-county alphabetical listings for this up-and-coming region.

Wines and Wineries of California’s Central Coast includes:
* Profiles of nearly 300 wineries personally visited by the author
*  Profiles of individual vintners
*  5 maps
* Winery ratings, plus author and winemaker recommendations
* Visitors’ and contact information for each winery
* Discussions of regional wine history and terroir
* Descriptions of designated American Viticultural Areas and grape varietals

Customer Review: Good overview of Central Coast wines
Let me start by saying that I am a little biased toward this book because the photograph on the cover is the view from my parents’ living room. I did not take the picture but the oak tree and the grapevines in that picture have been a familiar sight for many years. This is a good overview of the wines and wineries of the Central Coast. It is a good place to start to build your own “Sideways” trip. I have my favorites as I am sure others have theirs. The Central Coast is often overlooked by many as a serious wine country but those who actually know what they are talking about know this region as the real wine country in California, not our Napa neighbors up north.

The heart of Burgundy, the Côte D’Or, produces Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines that are unrivaled in their quality, intensity, and ability to age in the bottle. On this “golden slope” in eastern France, with its unique terrains and climats, grow the vines for some of the world’s finest wines, among them such heralded names as Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée, Puligny- and Chassagne-Montrachet, and Aloxe-Corton. Clive Coates, Master of Wine, has spent much of the last fifteen years in the Côte D’Or, and this book is the splendid result of his assiduous exploring, tasting, and assessing of the region’s wines.
With his unique access to each clos and domaine, and to individual negociants and vignerons, Coates may know more about the Côte D’Or and its wines than any other living writer. In Part One, he describes the Côte D’Or’s famous villages, introduces every manor grower and his wines, and evaluates each grand and premier cru, recommending the best sources in every climat. Part Two profiles the top sixty domaines, with notes on a vertical tasting of one of their wines. Part Three consists of vintage assessments on the best red and white years since 1945 and includes thousands of detailed tasting notes.
Côte D’Or is a work of love and passion, praise and criticism, understanding and scholarship. Above all, it is a celebration of one of the world’s great wine regions, the people who live there, and their fabled wines. It is an essential addition to every wine library and an inviting read for any wine lover.

Customer Review: Coates Review
Overall, the text is easy to read and it is educational. However, the individual wines reviewed are not even close to being up to date. Because this was written years ago, it doesn’t cover many of the new up and coming wines and vintners.

Customer Review: The best of its kind
Burgundy is one of the most difficult-to-grasp wine regions in the world. Many studies have been done on the soil, climate, wind direction, sun exposure, rainfall, etc., yet nobody really knows, yet, why one acre of Burgundy produces a certain kind of wine and the acre right next to it something different. Clive Coates book comes as close as humanly possible to explain it. He begins his sections with a “History” of the region, then continues with “Location”, “Vineyard”, and then defines and describes the wines made from the Grand Crus and the Premier Crus, recommending sources and also providing the size of each vineyard. Also, he covers vintages.

It’s amazing how Coates takes such a difficult region and maps it out so succinctly for us. Far better effort than Parker’s “Burgundy”.

It’s Napa versus Sonoma, and the antics are rampant!

When acclaimed Vanity Fair journalist Alan Deutschman came to the California wine country as the lucky house guest of very rich friends, he was surprised to find a civil war being fought between Napa Valley, which epitomized prestige and wealthy excess, and neighboring Sonoma Valley, a ragtag bohemian enclave so stubbornly backward that rambunctious chickens wandered freely through town. In A Tale of Two Valleys, Deutschman wittily captures these stranger-than-fiction locales and uncorks the hilarious absurdities of life among the wine world’s glitterati. The cast of characters brims with eccentrics, egomaniacs, and a mysterious man in black who crashed the elegant Napa Valley Wine Auction before proceeding to pay a half-million dollars for a single bottle. What develops is nothing less than the struggle for the soul of one of America’s last bits of paradise.

A San Francisco Chronicle bestseller

Customer Review: Feels like a run-on magazine article
Echoing what others have written, this is an extremely light account of the Sonoma and Napa wine regions. Unclear plot line (is there one?) and very little depth on any of the subjects that could have made it interesting (how about at least letting us know how the Screaming Eagle tasted?). If you are looking for a short, light hearted read with some reasonably interesting tidbits on Sonoma and Napa, this is an ok read. If you’re looking for an ejoyable read with depth and history, this isn’t it – your time would be much better spent reading House of Mondavi.

Customer Review: Sour Grapes
Chock full of interesting characters and insightful observations, A Tale of Two Valleys is an entertaining read that ultimately disappoints for lack of a plot or central character. Deutschman stumbled on the subject matter to produce a West Coast version of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, but he seems to lack the creative instincts. He tells us too much and too little about himself, as if he can’t decide how much of a presence he should have in his story. That said, his tidbits on the French Laundry (“an excerise in literary and aesthetic showmanship”), the Russian River Valley (“summer camp for the Castro District”), Lake Tahoe’s Incline Village as a tax haven (“Incline Village is to Californians what Monaco is to Europeans”) and where to hang out if you want to meet Sonoma’s locals (the Irish pub and the Farmer’s Market) are some of the many little gems that make the book worthwhile. Deutschman has a good eye and a good ear. I hope the next time he asks himself WWTWD – What Would Tom Wolfe Do? – and does it.

Customer Review: A Wine Country Must
We just spent a week in Napa Valley and this book did not leave our car the entire trip. This book covers the major areas of Napa (St. Helena, Calistoga, etc), Sonoma, other popular wine regions in Cali, though a majority is dedicated to Napa. It essentially includes the highlights and must sees as well as some “off-the-beaten-path” wineries. It’s also evident the writer visited each and every winery mentioned there is a spot on description (full paragraph) of the wineries which includes details about the atmosphere, a brief history, what to expect at tastings, etc. It’s also loaded tips and suggestions for wine country – biking trails, scenic drives, tasting room etiquette, etc.

This is definately recommended for first timers.

Thoroughly revised and updated, this sixth edition of the Parker’s Wine Buyer’s Guide has been eagerly awaited by seasoned collectors and occasional drinkers alike. No one wants to waste his or her precious dollars on an unenjoyable bottle, and with Parker’s advice in hand, no one ever will. Employing his famous 100-point rating system, Parker rates more than 8,000 wines from all the major wine-producing regions in the world — including newly expanded sections on the popular wines of California and Italy. Each wine producer is evaluated separately, and Parker’s independence allows him to be completely honest in his opinions. In addition, the book includes other essential information, such as how to buy and store wine, how to spot a badly stored and abused bottle, and how to find the best wine values for under $10.

Customer Review: THE Bible for wine people.
If you are a beginner or a total expert, this book is your constant source of review–it never gets outdated because one always needs to refer to it. Even to those who are not Robert Parker fans, have this book in their wine collection. A MUST!

Customer Review: Five books in one
Parker’s guide currently available came out some time already and does not cover the latest vintages, but the book is still an incredible source of information about wine-making, geographical regions etc. It’s as if we were buying a few good books in one. You have over 1,600 pages in the book! As such, it offers very good value, especially at the discounted price at which it’s available now. It is especially useful for people interested in European wines, as it does not cover New World brands in such detail as it does, for example, French or German wines. I strongly recommend the book not just to wine buyers but also to people who want to know more about wines. No other book offers so much at this price. Personally, I treat the reviews as guidelines only though; You may not necessarily like the wines Parker likes, or you may not necessarily be able to afford them. The book does not cover the cheapest lot

Customer Review: Experiencing the crush of harvest season
The cooler temps and shortening days here in the Pacific Northwest signal the harvest season is upon us and with it comes crush. While reading the updates on this year’s harvest, I am reminded of Brian Doyle’s excellent book, “The Grail: A Year Ambling & Shambling Through an Oregon Vinyard in Pursuit of the Best Pinot Noir Wine in the Whole Wild World”. If you have ever been curious about what it’s like to work in a vineyard and/or winery during crush, then this is the book to read.

In this wonderful account, Doyle shares the year he spent following Don Lange and his son, Jesse, of Lange Estate Winery and Vineyards located in Dundee, Oregon. He begins his story in late fall after crush, when the vineyards become dormant, but much work remains in the winery. Doyle then traces the trials and tribulations of the Lange father-son duo as they work through the winter, spring and summer, culminating in the fall harvest when crush is in full swing again.

Doyle’s writing style lends well to the subject of wine, for he does an excellent job providing readers with useful metaphors and insightful thoughts on the larger context of grape growing and wine making. I liked his emphasis on how wine should be celebrated as part of a meal, which is in keeping with the Lange’s approach to winemaking. The book is an entertaining read and very enlightening. I came away with a much deeper appreciation for estate wineries in general, as these folks are as much farmers as they are winemakers.

“The Grail” is one of my favorite wine books because of its primary focus on the “who”, while still delivering on the “what” and “where”. It’s a book that will take you beyond the bottle and connect you to people and places producing wine in Oregon. So, as the weather starts to encourage curling up with a book, consider picking up “The Grail” along with a good bottle of Oregon pinot noir. In fact, I recommend trying a Lange pinot noir while you’re at it.

Customer Review: Disconnected Writing
I am a big Pinot Noir fan, especially from Oregon. So I had high hopes for this book, but after reading the first 4 or 5 chapters, I really lost interest. I felt like the writing was disconnected and didn’t flow. I couldn’t stay in the story, if you could call it a story. Glad I checked it out from the library.

This high-level yet readable analysis of one of the world’s most respected wine regions has been expanded; the first edition dealt only with the left bank, and this new edition adds coverage of the south bank of the river Bordeaux. It is an all-embracing, comprehensive volume by an award-winning wine writer. Brook, whose books have received such prestigious awards as the Prix du Champagne Lanson, Glenfiddich, and Veuve Clicquot prizes, provides insider information about how the great Médoc, Graves, and other world-famous Bordeaux wines are produced, from the red Pauillac Cabernet Sauvignons to the sweet Sauterne whites. Detailed maps and photos cover the most famous châteaux and communes, as well as smaller specialists and newcomers worth watching.

Customer Review: AN EXCEPTIONAL VOLUME
The Complete Bordeaux: The Wines*The Chateaux*The People (Mitchell Beazley Wine Library)

Whilst Stephen Brook is not the best known author in the world of fine wine, his recent book is certainly likely to put him irrevocably on the best seller list in this field. Whether read by the novice or professional, the reader cannot help but be informed as never before on the fascination of wine as it is in Bordeaux. Massive, previously unknown detail contains a veritable mine of invaluable information on properties, production methods, vintages and personalities. The seven hundred pages are crammed with interest from beginning to end. The only downside is that the type size is too small for those inclined to short-sightedness. Buy, buy, buy!!

Customer Review: Currently, the best book on Bordeaux wine
Stephen Brook released the first part of this book, which was devoted to Médoc and Graves, in 2006, and it won the André Simon Award. This volume includes that material and also includes material on Sauternes and the Right Bank. Currently, this is the most comprehensive and most up to date reference book covering the wines of Bordeaux.

There are over 700 pages of densely printed type, with about a thousand detailed profiles of estates. Brook has visited many of the estates, and he conveys love and enthusiasm for the wines, the people, the vineyards and the geography of the region.

The book begins with a very good chapter on `The Land’ (including terroir, grape varieties and vititulture), a helpful chapter on `Winemaking and Style’ and an excellent chapter on the Bordeaux wine market.

In the main section, Brook describes the important appellations with a general introduction, followed by a description and assessment of each of the estates covered in the book, including statistics, contact details and websites. Here Brook cautions the reader: “[T]he statistics – even when obtained directly from the estates – can be wildly unreliable….”

Brook does not provide formal tasting notes: “other writers – notably Robert Parker, Clive Coates MW, Michael Broadbent, Michel Bettane – have already done so. … I have, in the case of important properties, given a more detailed account of the vintages I have tasted, so that the reader can gain some notion of what the wines are like to drink.”

In a recent interview he described his general approach: “Existing books on Bordeaux, such as Robert Parker’s or Clive Coates’s, were focused on tasting notes of individual wines, and paid little attention to lesser known areas of Bordeaux which offer good value to consumers. My book was intended to rectify that by including all regions of Bordeaux, as its title suggests. Many winelovers who might have bought Bordeaux routinely in the past may have become disillusioned by the soaring prices of the top growths, and it was part of my intention to discuss the vast number of excellent wines that remain eminently affordable.” The entire interview appears on intowine.com and provides a very interesting expansion of Brook’s views on the wines of Bordeaux.

(Brook is referring to Bordeaux: A Consumer’s Guide to the World’s Finest Wines by Robert Parker and The Wines of Bordeaux: Vintages and Tasting Notes 1952-2003 by Clive Coates.)

Brook’s text is very well written, but the color illustrations add little of value. The maps for Médoc and Graves are quite good, but those for the Right Bank are tiny and hard to read, especially with the topographical shading.

“Decanter Magazine” also pointed out that “The two Graves maps are misplaced (and one is mistitled) within the text, and there are a fair number of inaccurate locations: Léoville-Las-Cases, Gruaud-Larose, St Pierre. … There are also some needless errors: Mouton Rothschild was not a first growth until 1973, Yquem is a premier cru supérieur, not a premier grand cru. Details maybe, but in an authoritative reference book they matter.”

The criticisms are minor; this is currently the leading reference work on Bordeaux and its wines.

Robert C. Ross 2007 2008

Customer Review: Surprisingly In Depth Despite Being a Dummies Title
A wonderful text covering Italian wine in an easy to read format. You may browse through the noted sections and glance over the meat if you want a cursory education on Italian wine. There are very few in depth texts on Italian wine, mainly due to the convoluted DOC system and the overabundance of native grape varieties and grape psuedonyms. The authors give a valiant effort that is worthy of a read.

Pros: great knowledge, easy to follow
Cons: difficult Italian systems, poor maps

Customer Review: Great for Traveling and Tasting Italy
This book helps you select wisely amoung the countless wineries and labels of the delicious wine you will taste in Italy. The book makes it easy to understand which wine taste great in the separate regions, without having to know any of the stuck-up jargon wine experts blab to sound impressive. More importantly the book does not recommend the expensive wine to be best for your palate. You will find the bottles that taste like $50, but are less than $20.
