A rollicking wine country travelogue paired with the only comprehensive guide to Napa’s public tasting rooms

Hank Beal is a wine pro–the executive wine buyer at an upscale supermarket chain. Rick Kushman is an ordinary joe–a guy who enjoys wine but doesn’t know a lot about it. Together, Hank and Rick set out to visit all 141 public tasting rooms in Napa during the course of a year. The result is A Moveable Thirst–an engaging, often hilarious book that’s one part Sideways, one part Frommer’s. The first part recounts their uproarious adventures on the road as Rick learns to sniff and spit like a true oenophile (but never stops asking stupid questions). The second part offers the most complete and detailed guide ever published to Napa’s wine rooms. For wine lovers and the more than 5 million people who visit Napa every year, A Moveable Thirst is a great read and an indispensable guide.

Customer Review: Funniest Wine Book Written
What a funny book. A 12 month journey visiting all wine tasting rooms in NAPA. Not a review of the wines, but a review of the tasting rooms. If you are into NAPA Wines, then this is the book to read. Each chapter is a short story. I would have given anything to be able to take their year long journey. Very well written….

Customer Review: Informative and Engaging Read
I loved this book! Not only is A Moveable Thirst an informative read, it was a pleasure to read. The writing mirrors the rollicking ride these two authors obviously enjoyed while on their “Quest” in the Napa Valley. Highly recommend this to both the wine obsessed and anyone planning a wine tasting trip. Great fun!

Small plates in the form of Middle Eastern mezze, Spanish tapas, Mexican antojitos, and Venetian cicchetti are usurping traditional entrée-driven meals by offering greater selection and gastronomic fulfillment. To satisfy this growing niche, cookbook author Lori Lyn Narlock presents 50 delicious small-plate recipes and complementary wine pairings from the culinary experts at the Kendall-Jackson Wine Center, including celebrated chef Justin Wangler and winemaster Randy Ullom.
·In addition to specific chapters on salads, vegetables, meat, seafood, and desserts, Narlock includes sample party menus accompanied by preparation plans, as well as tips on buying and serving wine, planning and executing entire menus, sample table settings and presentation ideas, and more. More than 50 appetite-inspiring four-color photographs illustrate Small Plates, Perfect Wines: Creating Little Dishes with Big Flavors.
Instead of languishing in a culinary quandary this holiday, consider flavorful pairings like Asparagus with Melted Brie served with sauvignon blanc or Duck and Spinach Empanadas with Persimmon Chutney complemented by a glass of pinot noir.

Customer Review: I LOVE This Cookbook
I love this cookbook. The recipes are amazing! Among my favorite recipes are the Pork Saltimbocca With Pan Sauce, the Seared Tuna with Hazelnuts and Pink Peppercorns on Couscous, the Molasses-Almond Shrimp on Spicy Cabbage Salad and the Balsamic-Glazed Potatoes and Onions. Everything I’ve made from Small Plates, Perfect Wines so far has been very delicious! I had a dinner party recently and cooked only from this cookbook. The party was a great success. Along with each recipe are wine parings. I’d highly recommend this cookbook over others in the same category. It’s a winner.

This sequel to the highly-praised Bad Catholic’s Guide to Good Living allows you to view Catholic life from a unique perspective. Starting with the wines, beers, and liquors made around the world by monks, the authors explore everything from Irish history to the secrets of the Knights Templar, with drinking games, food, and cocktail recipes, and rollicking drinking songs.

Customer Review: Amazing book
I am amazed by this book. The book is organized, alphabetically, by the alcoholic beverage being discussed. In the course of discussing a wine or other potent potable, one learns European and US History, the history of the Church. One learns about Saints, about economics, about conspiracies, about theology. All done in a delightful way.

There is nothing a good Catholic need wince at here.

Each article is just about the right length for a short reading, perhaps after dinner, or perhaps by yourself while waiting for a ride to the ABC store.

Customer Review: Great book!
It is difficult to say anything about this book that has not been said already. Be sure to check out the 1st book in the series too: The Bad Catholic’s Guide to Good Living

1) It is irreverent… but FULL OF LOVE for the Church and Her history.

2) It is funny and campy, but proclaims the truth.

3) It has great drinking songs that gently poke fun at protestants…

4) And best of all, great drink recipes and party ideas.

All in all… AWESOME BOOK.

About Wine is a unique resource designed for those who require practical information on how to manage wine and wine sales for restaurants and the hospitality business. Unlike other texts on this subject, this text seeks first to give the reader background information on the origins of wine and how it is produced, and then builds upon this knowledge with information on the wine producing regions of the United States and the World. The numerous variations of wine produced in Europe, North America, and the Southern Hemisphere are presented. Special features of the text include detailed color diagrams and photographs, and useful appendices designed for use as a quick reference or a starting place for more research on topics of interest.

Customer Review: A Simple read with a pleasant bouquet
Needed for school, but enjoyed in spite of that fact.

Customer Review: Great for all beginners!
This is a great resource for the beginning wine lover. Not just culinary students, but average consumers can learn a lot. It’s written intelligently at a basic level and is very complete.

Customer Review: Review By Craig Justice, Founder, Blue Merle Vineyard & Winery
When we were planning our vineyard we needed all the help we could get. From Vines To Wines was one book kept by the bedside for constant reference during the planning and planting stage. (The other book was “Vineyard Simple.” The illustrated guide to pruning is exceptionally well done. Now that we’ve made it through year 1, I find myself going back to the book time and again. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in planting a vineyard. Craig Justice, Webmaster of Winemaker’s Journal and Founder, Blue Merle Vineyard & Winery

Customer Review: Especially good for trellising and pruning
I gave this to my father and he was so excited because it focused a lot on building a good trellis with good illustrations and also good for prunning.
These are two things that lack in other books that i have bought him (and that I am starting to be interested in, too).
Of course the book covers all aspects of the grape and wine making process, but the trellising and prunning in more detail was very welcome.
Recommended on all aspects.

Just about everything in Endora, Iowa (pop. 1,091 and dwindling) is eating Gilbert Grape, a twenty-four-year-old grocery clerk who dreams only of leaving. His enormous mother, once the town sweetheart, has been eating nonstop ever since her husband’s suicide, and the floor beneath her TV chair is threatening to cave in. Gilbert’s long-suffering older sister, Amy, still mourns the death of Elvis, and his knockout younger sister has become hooked on makeup, boys, and Jesus — in that order. But the biggest event on the horizon for all the Grapes is the eighteenth birthday of Gilbert’s younger brother, Arnie, who is a living miracle just for having survived so long. As the Grapes gather in Endora, a mysterious beauty glides through town on a bicycle and rides circles around Gilbert, until he begins to see a new vision of his family and himself….
With this wry portrait of small-town Iowa — and a young man’s life at the crossroads — Peter Hedges created a classic American novel “charged with sardonic intelligence” (Washington Post Book World).

Customer Review: Peel Me a Grape
By now, most anyone who doesn’t live under a rock has likely seen the film based on this book. The cast was great, the performances wonderful, (DiCaprio should have won the Oscar for this. Who didn’t think, even briefly, how the director “got that boy to do those things?” Admit it!) and ultimately, we feel good about the ending in an uneasy Euro-flick sort of way. If you grew up in a small town, Endora is Your Town and Gilbert Grape is Someone You Knew. Do yourself a favor and read the book, but don’t expect a feel-good read. Expect a window into the mind of an understandably jaded young man trying to make it through.

What the film can’t deal with, really, is the broad scope and study of the characters. The book is darker than the movie, a sort of comedy bouncing along with discordant background music. It’s funny and it’s not, much like growing up in the dying Endora that Hedges describes. Anyone with a similar experience of Smalltown, USA will just nod, smile, and keep right on reading because the matter-of-fact narrative hits home page after page. The characters get peeled open for us, especially Gilbert, as he is the narrator. Mama Grape is less a tragic feel-so-sorry-for-her figure and more the self-absorbed, pitious shadow that looms over this family. Gilbert also has more darkness in him than Johnny Depp was given room to convey in the film, although he did a fantastic job piquing our interest.

What really is eating Gilbert Grape? Read this book and find out how the future doesn’t immediately occur to someone whose present appears to be a prison.

Customer Review: Courtesy of Mother Daughter Book Club.com
The characters in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape by Peter Hedges are gritty and flawed and repulsive and totally engaging as well as entirely believable. It’s a great study of a young man seeking meaning for his life and trying to decide when he can put his own needs before the needs of a very dysfunctional family.

Gilbert’s day-to-day life in small-town Iowa is mind-numbingly realistic, and you can understand both his frustrations at the life he’s living and the limitations that keep him living it. As long as he doesn’t think too much about his situation or analyze his prospects for the future, life can go on as before.

But when a girl who is very different from anyone else Gilbert knows arrives on the scene, he begins to question everything. This is a great book to read in a mother-daughter book club of girls in 11th grade up or an adult book club and then to watch the movie. Comparing and contrasting the two is very interesting, particularly since author Peter Hedges also wrote the screenplay.

The ultimate guide for wine lovers who want to understand where their favorite wines are grown, how they are produced, and how best to savor them.
Internationally acclaimed wine expert Jens Priewe has written the book for the contemporary wine consumer who drinks what he or she likes–one day a grand, awe-inspiring vintage; the next, an unknown wine from a country whose name has only recently appeared on the wine maps of the world. Priewe explains why some wines cost hundreds of dollars while others cost only ten. He provides a key to the complex language of wine and illuminates the science of wine making while honoring the art that creates great wines.
About half of the book is devoted to the wine-making process itself, including everything from why wine grows best in poor soil to why a wine matures faster in a small barrel than in a large one. The other half, including the new topics covered in this edition, examines the best wines of the world, country by country, and guides the reader to an understanding of the intricacies of wine tasting and appreciation. The text has been fully updated throughout and is illustrated with more than 1,000 color images from computer graphics that explain the invisible processes of wine making to photographs of individual vineyards by the world’s best wine photographers. Wine will quench the thirst for knowledge that true wine lovers feel rising within them whenever they uncork a bottle of fine wine.
Other Details: 1,000 full-color illustrations.

Customer Review: A Wine Authority and Stunning Images
I manage an online multimedia class on Wine Appreciation and this book is the benchmark. Comprehensive simplicity is achieved throughout, and the images are the best of any wine book on the market. For each region, there are ariel photos, where each winery site is identified for famous areas like Berdeuox, Napa, the Piedmont, etc. This is a perfect book for anyone who loves wine, regarless of prior knowledge.

Customer Review: Great content, beautiful photographs
What first stuck me about this book is its visual beauty. Every single page has illustrations, maps, or stunning photographs which cover every imaginable step in the wine-making process. This book manages to give a wide overview of the considerations that go into making a wine, from “grape to glass”, but also provides a fascinating level of detail. This book would be perfect for a wine lover who wants to know more, or even as a reference book for a library.
